Overcoming the three Cs in backup and recovery

Nurdianah Md Nur | Dec. 5, 2014
Data complexity, lack of capability to deal with IT issues, and the demand for continuous operation are the main challenges of backup and recovery faced by SMEs.

As SMEs expand their business, they might face a situation where their backup environment contains both physical and virtual architectures, said Chan. To manage such an environment, SMEs should look for a solution that "enables them to be aware and manage all backup systems from a single console."

Symantec's Backup Exec is a solution that delivers such capability. The solution features intelligent dashboards and intuitive wizards for increased visibility and easy management in a  mixed backup environment. "Backup Exec auto detects virtual machines too so it can help SMEs manage virtual machine sprawls and protect required information," added Chan. Besides providing visibility and simplified management, Backup Exec features Symantec's patented granular recovery technology which allows versatile recovery at any scale — SMEs can restore an entire server or just granular data such as specific emails or folders.

When asked how backup and recovery solutions would evolve over time, Chan commented that there would be a greater blending of such solutions with disaster recovery capabilities to ensure high availability. He added that cloud platforms might emerge to cater to full disaster recovery too. "With cloud platforms evolving quickly, they could soon be used as an extension of SMEs' backup and recovery strategy, especially in the event of a natural disaster."
