Five years ago, Russian data leak prevention (DLP) specialist InfoWatch Group, appointed Malaysia-based DLP Technology SEA as its regional distributor.
December 2013 saw the second major step forward when Natalya Kaspersky chief executive officer of InfoWatch Group (InfoWatch) and co-founder of Kaspersky Lab visited Malaysia's capital city - Kuala Lumpur.
Following this five-year build up, Ms Kaspersky officially opened InfoWatch's SEA headquarters in Kuala Lumpur towards the end of last week.
Though the company's initial focus was on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), Ms Kaspersky, who unveiled data from InfoWatch's Analytical Labs during a media briefing, said that leaks of confidential information was on the rise. "[In the first half of 2013] figure is 18 percent higher compared to the same period last year. More than 258 million records were compromised, including those containing financial and personal data."
The at-risk sectors included large organisations, she confirmed. "While it is important for banks, other financial institutions and various sectors such as telecommunication and insurance that keep a database of sensitive information, customers too need to be aware what DLP is and be able to ask their service providers if their information is secure," she had said.
While InfoWatch put down roots into the region with particular focus on SMEs, small office/home offices (SOHOs), multinational companies (MNCs) also came into the company's first level of marketing in the region.

The regional HQ
During the opening of InfoWatch's full-service office in Kuala Lumpur, Ms Kaspersky said the focus will be "on the Malaysian, Indonesian and Vietnamese markets to ensure an overarching presence in Southeast Asia."
Ms Kaspersky said the new regional headquarters' growth plan will use direct sales its partner and customer ecosystem. In addition, the KL centre will provide technical support for the parent company's customer base, and product training for customers and partners in Southeast Asia.
She said the team in Malaysia will be supplemented by both Russian sales managers and engineers, and local specialists.
InfoWatch has now surpassed 1,500 large customers worldwide. The Malaysia opening also follows InfoWatch's first foreign business, which launched on 15 August 2027 in Dubai, UAE.

During an interview with Computerworld Malaysia in November 2014, two InfoWatch executives - Ekaterina Pshehotskaya, the Technology Development Director and linguist Tamara Sokolova- added to the picture of increasing data leaks.
