HP announces its approach to ‘modern’ cyber threats

Anushkar Mohinani | Sept. 23, 2011
The company’s expanded security portfolio is designed to transform enterprise risk management practice from the traditional silo-based approach to a more holistic approach.

HP yesterday (22 September) in Singapore announced its expanded security offerings intended to provide enterprises a comprehensive security strategy to address increasingly sophisticated attacks and threats from new technologies.

Organisations are demanding better security measures as the rise of mobility, cloud computing and social media puts new pressures on them to accommodate and mitigate security risks, said Colin Png, vice president of Enterprise Marketing for HP Asia Pacific and Japan. Moreover, with the upsurge in the volume and complexity of cyber threats, organisations are realising the importance of a comprehensive risk management strategy, he added.

“HP's Expanded Security Solutions portfolio provides the protection that enterprises require, while providing customers and employees with instant access to the right enterprise assets without compromising risk," he noted.

The new portfolio spans the vendor’s products and acquisitions including Arcsight, Fortify and TippingPoint, which Png highlighted are at the upper right hand of Gartner’s magic quadrant.

A new approach

In a survey, commissioned by HP, “60 percent of the respondents, comprising senior business and technology executives in the Asia Pacific, agreed that the volume of security events had increased,” said Png. “Forty-six percent said that in the past year, they experienced a security breach by unauthorised internal access and 39 percent said that they had experienced an external breach,” he added.

The study, according to Png, also indicated that although executives are aware of potential threats, they lack confidence in their organisation’s risk management approach. “Only 27 percent of the respondents believed that they were well-defended,” Png said

“The study demonstrates the need for enterprises to adopt a new and comprehensive approach to managing risk, “Png indicated.

HP’s new approach to enterprise security is designed to help enterprises assess, transform, manage and optimise their security investments, added Wong Loke Yeow, regional marketing director of HP Enterprise Security for Asia Pacific and Japan.

Rather than addressing minute aspects of the spectrum of security issues, HP’s security framework embodies an end-to end solution, Wong said.
