Digi Telecommunications (Digi) said it is first in Malaysia to implement the mobile-based authentication solution, GSMA Mobile Connect (Mobile Connect).

Digi's chief marketing officer Christian Thrane said Mobile Connect was now ready to use for's PRO Niaga users who are Digi customers.

Introduced two years ago, Mobile Connect has been picked up by 34 mobile network operators for use in 21 countries, including Telenor Group (Malaysia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Thailand), with Digi being one of the first worldwide to roll out the service in Malaysia.

Thrane said Mobile Connect used a single login solution, allowing customers to create and manage a universal digital identity with their mobile number as the ID link. The service links each individual to their digital services without the need to remember passwords and usernames for websites and applications.

He said the service used a unique PIN number for added protection.
"In an ever growing connected world, Digi constantly looks for solutions and services that empower people's digital lives," said Thrane.

Critical building block

"Through Mobile Connect, users are not only given a secure platform for digital transactions but it also provides context and attributes about the user to increase convenience," he said. "Digi customers now have a safe and easy way access mobile and digital services such as e-commerce, banking, health, digital entertainment and e-government applications via their mobile phones when more of these services become available."

"This is a critical building block in our ambition of becoming our customers' favourite partner in digital life," added Thrane. "We first introduced Mobile Connect Open Beta through on 17 Dec 2015. Now, Digi customers logging in for the first time will require them to link their Pro Niaga account with a Mobile Connect account, enabling them to digitally confirm their identity and their credentials and grant safe online access."
In addition, he said the service's mechanism can also be used for legal and payment transactions. With Mobile Connect, users are now more in control of their personal data, managing their digital identity and the solutions and services they use.
