Why the iPad Pro may, or may not, work at work

Factors to consider when deciding whether to use an iPad Pro as your main work computer

When it comes to shooting photos and video, the new iPad Pro actually outperforms the larger model, with expanded camera capabilities — many of which are borrowed from the iPhone 6s/6s Plus. These new features are noted on Apple's iPad comparison page:

  • A 12-megapixel rear camera compared to the larger model's 8-megapixel offering
  • Support for live photos
  • Tap to focus and autofocus
  • Panoramic photos up to 63 megapixels (versus 43 on the larger iPad Pro)
  • 4K video recording (as opposed to 1080p HD recording)
  • Continuous autofocus when shooting video
  • A 5-megapixel front-facing camera (as opposed to 1.2 megapixel) with support for LED flash

Perhaps even more noteworthy differences relate the new iPad Pro's display. The True Tone display on the smaller iPad Pro adjusts the color temperature of the screen to ambient lighting conditions. This can make viewing the screen easier in a range of situations and as a user moves from one environment to another. This has obvious impacts for visual comfort, but it also has potential benefits for editing content or displaying content to clients or coworkers.

An equally important, if not more important, distinction is the reduced reflectivity of the display. Apple claims it is 40% less reflective than other iPad screens and is the least reflective display in the world. Anyone who's ever tried using an iPad outdoors will appreciate this feature and many will recall that Amazon built an entire ad campaign around the Kindle eInk display's ability to be used in sunlight.

For those who work outdoors, such as field service workers, or even in bright indoor settings, this could be a major selling point. Even mobile professionals that need to work while traveling by automobile, plane or train will likely appreciate this. (Personally, it's the feature that has tipped me in favor of buying the device.)

Regardless of whether or not millions or consumers or business users will be trading in their five-plus-year-old PCs for the new iPad Pro — as Apple seems to be hinting at — the device definitely rounds out the iPad lineup very nicely. It has a lot to offer in terms of specs and features, but what makes it really significant is that it offers a greater range of choice for selecting the best iPad for a given job.
