Q&A: The challenges of mobile data roaming

Matias Heilala, head of strategy and business development at Vodafone Global Enterprise, Asia and Africa, shares his thoughts about safe and sound choices for mobile data roaming in the region.

What precautions are there when one is data-roaming (apart from cost perspective), such as security issues?

The security of your communications should always be an important consideration. The use of public wi-fi when abroad, as a cost saving approach, is not always the best plan. It puts users and sensitive information at risk of a potentially disastrous data breach.

Businesses can take precautions against this by deploying solutions which monitor and protect all mobile devices, as well as the data on them, by filtering traffic and scanning for malware. Effective device management applications allow organisations to easily manage all smart devices without compromising on the company's security. These kinds of systems should allow you to disable a device if it is identified as a threat to the company's network or data.

Since Vodafone doesn't have a local presence in many Asian countries, how does one tap your services?

In 2011, we became part of the Conexus Mobile Alliance, one of Asia's largest mobile alliances which include many of the region's top mobile operators such as Singapore's very own StarHub. Through this partnership, businesses can leverage Vodafone services in various markets via our partner networks with the simplicity of a single point of management.
