MTR Hong Kong expands data network

10GE IP network with packet ring technology to improve MTR network's fail-over time of less than 50 milliseconds.

HONG KONG, 4 NOVEMBER 2008 Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) is planning to upgrade its data to improve reliability and support bandwidth-intensive applications like VoIP and video conferencing.

The Airport Express is one of the nine lines of the MTR that links the principal urban areas of Hong Kong to Hong Kong International Airport, while the Tung Chung Line connects Tung Chung island to Hong Kong Island.

The network upgrade service is provided by H3C, a Hong Kong-based IP networking solution provider. H3C would offer its 10GE IP network with Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology to upgrade the MTR's data network across 10 stations along the Airport Express and Tung Chung Line.

Improved fail-over time

As the number of users increases on our network along these high traffic lines, improved performance and reliability are our main concerns for the network upgrade, said Dominic Au-Yeung, construction manager-operations systems of MTR Corporation.

According to Au-Yeung, H3C was selected because their technology platform and their vision of IToIP are in line with the MTR's convergence strategy which is crucial in meeting ever increasing customer demand and business growth.

With the H3C solution, MTR will be able to improve the network fail-over time of less than 50 milliseconds a reliability level that is critical for IP-based mission critical applications. The solution would also expand the network bandwidth of the MTR's backbone infrastructure to 10G performance.

Bandwidth-intensive apps supported

The RPR technology framework is built on the H3C S9505 Intelligent Core switch and the H3C S5100 Intelligent Gigabit switch and will provide the MTR Corporation's data network with network reliability, increased bandwidth, and speedy recovery. The upgraded network along the Airport Express and Tung Chung Line would also improve business efficiency and support bandwidth-intensive applications like VoIP and video conferencing.

Using the RPR technology, the 10 stations will be linked up with 26 H3C S9505 switches, two at each station. It expected that the S5100 desktop switches would help ensure consistent policy and access control application. Each S5100 switch is connected to the S9505 core switch by a smart link with fail-over time in sub-second.
