M1 to strengthen backhaul network with Ericsson technology

Connectivity is the key to future high-bandwidth solutions.

Singapore communications provider M1 has turned to Ericsson to beef up its mobile backhaul network to provide more bandwidth to customers.

The investment in Ericsson technology was necessitated by the demand for more bandwidth as M1 customers continue to do more Internet browsing, video streaming and downloading of apps on their mobile devices .

M1 has entered into a multi-year contract with Ericsson for the latest MINI-LINK TN microwave and SPO 1400 optical systems. Included in the contract are the end-to-end management with Ericsson IP Transport NMS and ServiceOn Element Manager software.

Patrick Scodeller, chief technical officer, M1 Limited, described the upgrade as "essential" to meet the growing demand of users. "It allows us to support gigabit bandwidth connectivity while maintaining the highest quality of service."

Currently on the roll, the optical systems and other related services are expected to support phase and time synchronisation for LTE services.

Flexibility

At the end of the upgrade, M1 sees improved quality of experience for users. Increased network capacity and greater operational flexibility are also expected because of the IP connectivity up to the network.

Nicholas Seow, president, Ericsson Singapore and Brunei, said connectivity is "key".

"It (connectivity) also presents a path to future high-bandwidth solutions," Seow said. "The use of Ericsson's advanced platforms ensures that, when the time comes to introduce new services, the transition will be a smooth one."

Also under the contract, Ericsson will transform M1's existing TDM-based mobile backhaul network to a more efficient packet network. This will be achieved using its Mobile Backhaul solution, with a MINI-LINK TN microwave system currently capable of delivering a capacity of 1Gbps.

Aside from future HSPA and LTE services, the upgrade will enable M1 to continue to provide cost-effective GSM and WCDMA services.
