Telcos aren't ready for new Australian data retention laws

Legislation was passed in March, which requires all service provider to maintain metadata on all customers.

The type of metadata that service providers will have to keep includes:

  • Source and destination of a communication
  • Date, time and duration of a communication
  • communication type
  • location of communications equipment

The data set also includes subscriber and service-level account information.
