The ceremony is part of the 2013 D23 Expo, an event for Disney fans. The award comes in the shape of a two-foot-tall bronze Disney Legends sculpture that is designed to symbolise the "imagination, creativity and magic they [the award winners] have brought to the company".

Disney Legends has been active for 26 years and in the past has been awarded to actor Robin Williams, actress Julie Andrews, Muppets creator Jim Henson and musician Sir Elton John. Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said, "The Disney Legend Award is our highest and most coveted honor, it's reserved for the extraordinary visionaries and artists behind the Disney magic, the men and women who push the limits of innovation and creativity to ensure Disney remains truly special." He added, "The expanded our definition of what's possible. They are all indelible parts of our legacy, and we are proud to recognize them as true Disney Legends."

Also honoured at the awards this year are Monsters Inc. and Monsters University stars Billy Crystal and John Goodman as well as American television icon Dick Clark.
