Local telecommunication company, Singtel, announced today the launch of Wavee, which it describes to be the next-generation IP-based communications app.
In its media statement, Singtel claims to be the first mobile operator in Southeast Asia to launch such a service.
With this new app, users will be able to make high quality voice and video calls. As network conditions can vary between locations, Wavee is able to detect the strength of each user's network and optimise the call quality for the best experience. Video calls will soon be equipped with this ability too.
Currently, both the caller and receiver must have the app to enjoy the free calls, as long as they are on a data or WiFi connection. A new feature that allows calls from Wavee to any local number will be available in the second half of 2015, said Singtel.
Like WhatsApp, users can also send instant messages, share their locations with friends on the map, set up chat groups; as well as attach photos, videos and audio files to messages.
Android users also have the option to integrate their text messages into their Wavee message inbox. Choosing Wavee as their default messaging app directs all texts to the apps, reducing the need to toggle between the two. Singtel said that it plans to extend this service to iPhone users as well in the near future.
One unique feature of Wavee is that it does not allow advertising on its platform. In addition, users can multi-task on this app. Similar to Skype, it allows users to send messages and files while on a voice call.
Wavee also features a range of specially designed, locally themed stickers, including one with army-related references. Users can send their friends and family a sketch, choose a photo, file or colour as the background, and easily overlay a border, sticker, text or a freehand sketch.
According to Singtel, it is working on inviting local designers and design students to collaborate on these stickers. The range of stickers available will also be expanded, it added.
"People are looking for richer, more seamless and personal ways of communicating. With Wavee, we are giving our customers a holistic, end-to-end service," said Johan Buse, Singtel's VP for Consumer Marketing. "Wavee is the first of its kind to combine all these features on one app, with a distinctively local touch."
Wavee is a free mobile app that is available for download on both Android Google Play and Apple App Store. From today till July 9, all local data charges for Wavee usage on Singtel prepaid and postpaid lines will be waived.
