Singapore's Carousell boosts its engineering capability

The e-commerce company acquihires safety app WatchOverMe team to improve trust and safety and location-based abilities.

Singapore's e-commerce app, Carousell, has acquihired WatchOverMe's engineering and product teams, in a bid to improve its trust and safety and location-based abilities.

WatchOverMe is an app designed to help women feel safer by pushing notifications to emergency contacts when in danger. The service, which will soon be open-sourced, is based in Malaysia and used by 250,000 people worldwide. 

With WatchOverMe on board, Carousell aims to mark its position in Asia Pacific as the top tech startup. The engineering team boasts talents from countries like Ukraine, Malaysia, Luthiana,India and Malaysia.  A well-integrated platform will improve discovery and community engagement for the app's expansion.

The team will be led by Andrius Baranauskas, whom Carousell has added as the Director of Product. Baranasukas was previously Head of Product at Fashion marketplace, Vinted.

Founder of Xseed Solution and app developer, Jinny Wong, will lead the development of trust and safety services to enhance the overall community experience at Carousell. Wong designed apps for several MNCs previously, according to a press release.
