Singapore Pools is planning to launch a licensed gambling website that will be based in Singapore.
The move is part of the lottery operator's efforts to revamp its portal, according to sources who spoke to The Straits Times. Currently, the portal only allows its existing members to check their previous transactions. With the new portal, members will be able to place bets online instead of via the phone.
It is still undecided if the new website will be realised. Previous attempts to set up a betting website were rejected by the authorities but Singapore Pools is said to have been in talks with government agencies such as the National Council on Problem Gambling this time round. A decision on whether to go ahead is expected to be made only mid next month, after a public consultation on how to best tighten remote gambling laws.
Even though Singapore Pools declined to comment on the plans, sources close to the matter claimed that its IT department has started designing a members website with an online betting since two months ago, according to The Straits Times.
