Schneider Electric SE has located its Center of Excellence in Barcelona, Spain, as it steps up its drive to develop solutions for smart cities, a concept seen as the challenge to global urbanisation this 21st century.
A press statement by the Ille de France-based provider of energy management solutions said the Center of Excellence opened in late July and together with a similar R & D facility by Cisco Systems inc. is the first locator in Barcelona's smart city campus.
Intended to be fully operational sometime mid-2016, the Smart City campus is the result of Barcelona's vision to be the R&D center for smart city solutions, whose market for such is expected to reach trillions of US dollars within this 21st century.
No exact definition exists for the term 'smart city'. However, it is generally understood to be an urban centre with a sustainable and environmentally-friendly economy, effective governance, and efficient as well as effective infrastructure.
Playing a major role in it is ICT, since the city is highly networked. Its residents are highly educated and work in knowledge-based and/or creative industries.
The press statement said Schneider Electric is currently involved in smart city projects in around 200 cities worldwide. It added that with Cisco Systems' R & D facility located nearby on the campus, there will be more opportunities for collaboration in the future.
