Businesses will be able to use Apigee's application programming interface (API) management software as a SAP tool on-premise and in the Hana cloud, the vendor announced this morning.

The news signals that businesses are fast realising the value of APIs to their growth. ITV and Orange recently announced they were using Apigee's API platforms to seduce the best in developer talent to build apps and services for customers.

Apigee provides a developer-friendly layer that allows APIs, code that grants access to each application in a system, to make a company's back end services available online for customer-facing applications and platforms securely.

Network provider Orange's developer hub, Orange Partner hopes to open up new revenue streams by using the analytics aspect of the Apigee platform, called Apigee Insights. 4G, near-field communications (NFC), TV and smart home projects will be developed this year, all aided by the ongoing API releases.

Further, using customer data like query searches (what a customer searches on their device) the carrier could provide anonymised information to market intelligence companies.

ITV, the largest commercial television network in the UK, deployed Java-based Apigee Edge, an API platform that functions as a middle layer between the back end and the customer-facing platforms, in June. This will allow ITV to modify its core systems, for example, change a database, without affecting its 19 different platforms across mobile, desktop and television through ITV.com, ITV Player and through partners Netflix and iTunes.

Bjrn Goerke, SAP executive vice president and corporate officer, SAP Product & Innovation Technology, said: "Businesses are increasingly recognising APIs as a key ingredient to participate in the digital economy.

"Today's announcement is a great example of how the SAP HANA platform and our ecosystem of partners can help provide a more powerful combination for customers preparing for the digital future by leveraging their digital assets and making them consumable by their customers and the larger ecosystem. We look forward to helping SAP customers and their businesses tap into the value creation through controlled API management with Apigee."

Apigee will be hosting its "I love APIs" conference from 8 -10 September in San Francisco.
