Saigon Hanoi Bank to offer new services with technology update

IBM will support Vietnamese bank’s new online and mobile services.

One of Vietnam's commercial banks said it has ventured into new online and mobile services as it recognises the popularity of mobile devices among the Vietnamese, especially among the Internet-savvy younger generation.

Saigon Hanoi Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SHB) has tapped the services and products of IBM to enable them to offer the new banking services backed by a streamlined and efficient IT infrastructure aimed at serving the bank clients regardless of channel. IBM said it will help SHB grow its business, including its venture into new banking channels with the support of automated back-end systems.

SHB was established in 1993 and currently has 317 branches and transaction offices in the country and two offshore offices in Cambodia and Laos. On its website, the bank said its goal is to become "a leading modern multifunctional retail bank and a financial holding group by 2015."

There is much room for growth in Vietnam's banking sector as statistics show that only 20 percent of its population have bank accounts. Yet, there are reportedly more mobile phone users than population in the country. The Vietnam government's 2012 data show there are more than 121.7 million mobile phone subscribers compared to a population of almost 89 million, as per World Bank estimates.

To tap into this potential opportunity for growth, SHB has launched new mobile- and online-enabled services, including payroll services, credit card insurance, loan applications and overdraft protection to clients.

IBM has provided SHB with a solution composed of IBM Power Systems servers, IBM System Storage and IBM Tivoli software.

"SHB places special emphasis on the role of technology in transforming operations and enabling growth, especially after the important acquisition of Habubank in 2012. Our rapid growth in recent years caused an exponential increase in the data we operate with," said Nguyen Van Le, chief executive officer, SHB. "We realised that if we want to launch innovative services to new client segments, while at the same time adhering to compliance regulations, we have to be able to manage much more data-intensive transactions and analyse that data in real time to improve customer service."

Nguyen Kim Hoa, country manager, System and Technology Group, IBM Vietnam, said its Smarter Computing portfolio can help Vietnamese organisations adopt smarter computing systems "which use intelligence to drive operational efficiencies and optimise workloads, concurrently reducing costs."

Hoa added that the solution implemented by SHB has helped the bank introduce new innovative online and mobile banking services to new client segments.
