It's official today (Tuesday, June 25, 2013): HP has been named the preferred technology partner of Oriental DreamWorks, the newly established joint venture between the China Media Capital (CMC)-led China consortium and DreamWorks Animation.

Shanghai-based Oriental Dreamworks, is effectively now China's largest and most advanced animation production base, and was founded to "help meet the demands of China's rapidly expanding film base...[a market that] has experienced a growth rate of 30 percent per year," according to HP executives.

"[The HP-Oriental DreamWorks partnership] builds on a decade-long collaboration between HP and DreamWorks Animation SKG," they said. "Together, the companies have pushed the boundaries of technology to help DreamWorks Animation transition from a traditional animation company to a fully digital entertainment industry."

The HP-DreamWorks partnership dates back to the first animated feature film Shrek, and since then, "HP solutions have been the technology backbone for the development of blockbuster films such as the Kung Fu Panda franchise, Puss in Boots, [the rest of the] Shrek series and How to Train Your Dragon," the HP executives said. "[And now] Oriental DreamWorks will partner DreamWorks Animation for the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 3 film which will be a coproduction between the two companies."

"DreamWorks is one of the world's greatest storytellers who has used technology to deliver a customer experience second to none," said HP's President and CEO Meg Whitman. "Now, we are accompanying Oriental DreamWorks on this new journey to create a world-class animation facility in China."

At the announcement, in a ballroom of Kerry Hotel, Beijing, as part of HP World Tour 2013, were CEOs Jeffrey Katzenberg of DreamWorks Animation and Whitman of HP.

Reaffirming his belief in the strength of the relationship between their two companies, Katzenberg talked about how essential the extension of their partnership to China will be to the success of Oriental DreamWorks. "HP continues to be a trusted partner that helps us produce an innovative product with compelling content that engages the world," he said.

As part of the relationship between Oriental DreamWorks and HP, the animation company will "leverage the broad portfolio of integrated solutions [offered by HP], such as HP Converged Infrastructure comprising HP Moonshot servers, HP StoreAll 9700 and HP StoreServ 7000, HP's public and private cloud, and HP networking solutions," said HP executives. Additionally, "Oriental DreamWorks will utilize the latest personal systems innovations from HP such as the HP ElitePad 900, HP Z1 and Z820 workstations, flow printers, and digitization and print services."
