One instead of three
With the new systems in place, the IT team now has improved visibility of its storage resources. "We are now able to see across the virtualised storage infrastructure and get the whole picture of the data load and requirements in order to improve disk utilisation and reclaim pockets of capacity," explained Son. In addition, the IT team only needs to be familiar with one platform instead of three different systems.
Leveraging on NetApp's SnapVault disk-based backup solution, Vinamilk has also managed to improve its disaster recovery capabilities and reduce the time taken for backup and recovery.
"We were using tape backup before, which took up to a full day. SnapVault has helped to reduce this to just under an hour, because backup is done by only copying the data blocks that have changed. We are also able to run backup more frequently and for all files and applications, as opposed to only specific business applications previously," said Son. Other benefits of the new NetApp solution include higher data availability and faster application access for end users.
Looking ahead, Vinamilk is exploring other NetApp offerings like Flash Cache, a performance optimisation tool that can maxismise capacity while conserving power, cooling and space. Son added that the company is also looking at the possibility of a private cloud with NetApp.
