For its business strategies and achievements, Malaysia-based 3G firm U Mobile has clinched the Global Leadership Award - Telecommunication Sector, it said.

During the awards ceremony held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, U Mobile chief executive officer Jaffa Sany Ariffin said the award recognised U Mobile's actualisation of its strategic initiatives to expand both its network and distribution channels.

"We are honoured to be awarded with such a prestigious award," said Jaffa, on receiving the award from the Leaders International group chief executive officer, Shahul Hameed Shaik Dawood, and leadership guru, Arthur F. Carmazzi.

"This recognition will continue to spur us on to be bold, innovative and strategic in our business direction and our efforts to connect lives through quality mobile services," he said. "I would also like to extend our thanks to our consumers, dealers, vendors and partners who have shown unremitting support to U Mobile and contributed greatly to our success."

Jaffa said in November 2012, U Mobile activated its 3G RAN Sharing agreement with Maxis, which rapidly expanded its 3G network across Peninsular Malaysia. "This pact is also the first in Asia and also the only active RAN sharing in the region."

The partnership allowed U Mobile to reduce its capital expenditure (Capex) and operation expenditure (Opex), the savings from which are channelled into the business to provide more innovative and affordable services to its consumers, he said. "U Mobile also entered dynamic partnerships with a variety of companies to expand its distribution network. Its partners now include Giant, Senheng, JackCow and Berjaya RadioShack, as non-traditional distribution channels, which make U Mobile's products and services more accessible to its customers."

The Global Leadership Awards is an initiative under the American Leadership Development Association, an international network for all those who practice, study, preach and teach leadership.
