Local telecommunications company, M1, has commercially rolled out the HetNet (Heterogeneous Network) last Friday, 19 August 2016.
As customer demand for data continues to grow, HetNet provides faster network and high bandwidth for mobile applications, such as video streaming, social media and online gaming.
According to the media release, M1 will integrate Nokia's Flexi Zone small cells across hundreds of hotspots around the island, to complement its 4G+ network. M1 expects to deliver download speeds of more than 1Gbps by 2017.
The deployment sites will include LRT/MRT stations, malls and places of interest such as Marina Bay and Clarke Quay. The small cells will also allow M1 to deploy them at inaccessible areas such as car parks, basements and parks.
The rollout was previously proven to be successful at Paragon Mall, Orchard and Raffles MRT stations, as well as multiple locations in Jurong East-as part of Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore's (IDA) HetNet trials. Customers, in both indoor and outdoor areas made use of the fast network connectivity service.
"As Singapore moves towards a Smart Nation, we look forward to working closer with companies in the tech, engineering and R&D space to develop solutions that can enhance connectivity, and improve Singaporeans' lives," said Mr Gabriel Lim, Chief Executive-Designate, Info-communications Media Development Authority of Singapore(IMDA).
