One of the busiest transport systems in the world is getting some help from PCCW Solutions, a subsidiary of Hong Kong telecommunications provider PCCW.
Hong Kong's MTR Corporation has contracted the services of PCCW Solutions to design, develop and implement a new engineering work and traffic information management System (ETMS) that will help manage the busy transport network with minimal disruption.
MTR Corporation operates Hong Kong's mass rail transport network that includes nine heavy rail commuter lines, the Airport Express and the Light Rail system.
The company wills use the ETMS, which is a Web-based user-friendly application, to manage and plan the maintenance and engineering works of the transport network.
PCCW Solutions will build the ETMS from the artificial intelligence engine developed by Dr. Andy Chun, the chief information officer for the City University of Hong Kong. ETMS is "an intelligent workflow system for engineering work planning and scheduling and will maximise the number of repair jobs done within the small overnight maintenance window of only three to four hours while ensuring operational safety and the use of resources," PCCW Solutions said in a press statement.
"ETMS is much more than a software application," said Daniel Lai, head of information technology, MTR Corporation. "ETMS is an IT solution that uses advance information technology and encapsulates MTR's expertise, experience and best practice and effective processes in railway engineering planning and scheduling."
In designing the new ETMS, PCCW Solutions managing director George Fok said its goal was "to help MTR leverage the state-of-the-art technologies to streamline workflow, optimise resource utilisation and maximise the quality of passenger train service".
The ETMS project is not the first collaboration of the two companies. PCCW Solutions has also developed for MTR Corporation other mission critical applications, such as the RailASSURE, a railway asset management system to support MTR's operation in China.
