HID Global launches mobile ID platform

The HID goID platform for mobile IDs makes it possible to carry citizen IDs on smartphones.

HID Global -- a secure identity solutions provider -- has launched HID goID platform for mobile identifications (IDs), which will enable government agencies to issue credentials over-the-air to citizens' smartphones for driver's licenses, passports, social security cards and other national ID documents.

"Mobile IDs will simplify people's lives, empower them with more applications and increase the level of trust for individuals to use their digital identity," said Rob Haslam, Vice President and Managing Director of the Government ID business within HID Global.

He added: "As the first solution to enable convenient yet secure issuing and receiving of credentials over the air, the HID goID platform creates a brand new category for mobile citisen IDs. Governments around the world already rely on HID Global for major programmes, such as the US Green Card, Ireland Passport datapage, Angola National ID and more; HID goID lays the foundation for HID Global to lead the industry's evolution to mobile IDs as well."

Meanwhile, the HID Global is now engaging with national governments as well as state and provincial driver's license agencies about the possibility of launching goID pilots that will explore each jurisdiction's specific platform deployment objectives and requirements.

The new platform will eliminate the need for people to queue for new cards and renewals. It also focuses to prevent fraud through authentication over secure channels; optimise flexibility for online authentication if a citisen's phone batter is dead; simplify issuance through over-the-air provisioning; and protect privacy by utilising the Bluetooth connection of smartphones to allow the users to electronically present their credentials.

The HID goID platform for mobile IDs is part of HID Global's mobility initiative to improve user experience in this digital world.
