FedEx Express - a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. and an express transportation company - has opened its FedEx Cold Chain Centre at the FedEx Express World Hub in Memphis, Tennessee, United States.
The 7,710-square-metre facility was designed to protect the integrity of temperature-sensitive healthcare and perishable shipments made between Asia Pacific (APAC) and the U.S. plus other parts of the world. The new centre also forms an integral part of the FedEx global cold chain network and wider portfolio of the FedEx Healthcare solutions.
According to Karen Reddington, President of FedEx Express in APAC: "Modern cold chain logistics capabilities are opening up new possibilities for Asia Pacific's healthcare sector."
"Today, shipping even the most sensitive products such as biopharmaceuticals around the world, which would have been difficult or impossible just a few years ago, has become easier than ever. FedEx Cold Chain Center in Memphis places FedEx firmly at the leading edge of the revolution that is sweeping the global healthcare logistics market," she added.
The FedEx Cold Chain Centre in Memphis offers features to keep temperatures regulated in the event of unforeseen delays like clearance holds or inclement weather. It has a temperature-controlled areas for -25°C to -10°C (frozen), 2°C to 8°C (cold) and 15°C to 25°C (controlled-room temperature) products.
The centre also has separate areas for healthcare shipments and other temperature-sensitive perishables such as specialty foods, flowers and seafood.
Additionally, the centre's carbon dioxide and humidity levels, as well as temperature are monitored in real-time. It also has a 24/7 on-site International Document Agent (IDA) station which is monitored by FedEx Express personnel.
The centre also uses the FedEx Thermal Blanket solution - which is designed to meet controlled-temperature requirements during transit -to pallet, stage, handle and break down area for shipments.
The centre has dry ice replenishment and gel pack that exchange capabilities too. It also has a cross dock station with direct trailer access to cold (2°C to 8°C) environment and a cold lock dual door design for precise temperature control.
According to Fedex, the FedEx Cold Chain Centre in Memphis is the first of its kind for its network. It also operates smaller-scale cold chain facilities at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in France, the Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany, and the Kansai International Airport in Japan.
