Commonwealth Games blocks sports fans from buying tickets following website crash

The ticketing website for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has been shut until further notice to resolve ticketing issues caused by high traffic.

Ticketmaster is providing the ticketing system, following its appointment as the official ticketing provider for the London 2012 games. The Olympic Games' ticketing system suffered similar issues following high traffic and at one point a processing error caused an estimated 700 customers to be double-charged for their tickets.

Chief executive David Grevenberg told BBC Radio's Good Morning Scotland the crash was, "totally unacceptable" and that he was, "very sorry" after the online system was unable to cope with demand for 100,000 extra tickets on Monday.

As the problems persist, customers have taken to social media to complain they had been waiting at a screen for up to 24-hours to buy tickets. Some users found that once they were able to pay for the tickets they were looped back to the queue.

Glasgow 2014 closed the site at midnight on Monday to investigate the problem but customers still faced a wait for "more than 60 minutes", the official site warned today. The site will be shut down again until further notice.

A spokesperson for the Commonwealth Games said: "As traffic has increased, we have seen some recurrence of issues people were having with the ticketing website.

"We are continuing to sell tickets, but at the same time we need to investigate the cause of these issues and monitor the queue closely.

"We will provide an update on this website and our social channels on a regular basis."

Chief executive David Grevemberg told the BBC: "It was an incredibly frustrating and disappointing day yesterday.

"It's just not in keeping with the experience we are trying to create with Glasgow 2014. To put it simply, the system just did not cope.

"Despite being fully tested, it just did not cope with the churn."
