Air New Zealand has placed a total ban on the carriage of Samsung Galaxy Note7 devices, following a joint directive from the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the United States Department of Transportation (DOT).
Effective Sunday October 16, the blanket ban follows the global recall and discontinuation of Samsung’s flagship smartphone device.
With reports of overheating, smoke and fire increasing, Air New Zealand has joined a host of airlines across the world have moved to ban the Note7 from all flights - including Qantas and Virgin Australia - with passengers unable to carry the device in hand luggage or through checked baggage.
“These devices cannot be accepted for carriage either in person, in carry-on luggage, or in checked luggage,” an Air New Zealand spokesperson stated.
“Air New Zealand is strongly advising travellers not to bring these devices to the airport with them. They cannot be accepted for travel and there is no storage facility available for them at our check in areas.
“Owners of these devices should contact Samsung for advice on how to return their devices.”
Early indications suggest the fallout from the Note7 debacle - which is expected to take a big chunk out of Samsung’s third-quarter profit - will keep hurting its business into next year.
As reported by Reseller News, the fourth-quarter impact on the vendor’s operating profit will be "in the mid-2 trillion won range," which equates to around $US2.2 billion.
The damage will continue in the first quarter of next year, with an impact of about 1 trillion won, Samsung added.
Air New Zealand’s ban follows plans from Spark and Vodafone to offer $100 credit to customers in New Zealand.
