The world's first next generation intrusion prevention system with an integrated and intelligent application control system is now available in Malaysia, according to cyber security solutions provider Sourcefire.

On 12 March 2012, Sourcefire Malaysia country manager Ivan Wen said the next generation intrusion prevention system (NGIPS) gives organisations of all sizes enhanced visibility and intelligent security automation. "Since pioneered NGIPS in 2003, Sourcefire is extending its Agile Security vision by introducing the superior NGIPS with incorporated real-time contextual awareness and full-stack visibility, together with intelligent security automation and granular application control."

Wen said the solution's application control would help companies better control access to thousands of applications and provide custom detection and control for homegrown applications. "It equips customers with decisive threat-mitigating controls to reduce attack surface and to enforce use policies."

"With the application detection and control capabilities in a universal NGIPS platform, organisations can easily construct integrated security policies that balance access controls with robust threat prevention to comprehensively address application layer risks," he said. "Sourcefire's NGIPS is built on the high-performance FirePOWER platform. In addition to application control, features in the latest NGIPS release include FireSIGHT contextual awareness and automation and enhanced reporting."

Wen said that FireSIGHT provided:

  • Enhanced discovery of thousands of applications, including client-side applications, mobile browser versions and virtual machines
  • Real-time visibility into network users' activities
  • Network mapping and host profiling
  • Network and Layer 7 behaviour analysis and anomaly detection
  • Automatic impact assessment of security events to filter out "noise"
  • Automatic recommended policies based on contextual awareness

"The battle for network security is based on the concept of information superiority, in which two of the most critical tenets are visibility and control," he said. "Sourcefire offers the first true defence-in-depth solution which has multiple real time components that work in tandem to allow us to first see and control the threats - and by so doing, gain the information superiority advantage."
