Maxis has bundled its eKelas learning service with the Maxis Wireless Broadband plan to help parents and students with maths and science in the home, said the Malaysian telecoms firm.
"Schools in our pioneer programme that have used the eKelas in their day-to-day teaching and learning activities noted a significant increase in student achievement, attendance and attitude towards mathematics and science," said Maxis head of digital services T Kugan, adding that eKelas is an interactive online education portal developed through a smart partnership with the Malaysian Ministry of Education in 2011, initially to support a national initiative to increase ICT usage in schools.
"Based on the positive feedback, we have decided to bundle access to the eKelas portal together with our Maxis Wireless Broadband service to enable students and parents to access it outside of schools. Maxis eKelas is one choice that parents can tap into to directly influence their children's educational outcomes, all from their own home computer," said Kugan.
He said parents could now take advantage of Maxis value-for-money plan costing RM38 (US$11.39) monthly for a 7.2Mbps (megabits per second) USB modem, which comes with a 1.5GB (gigabyte) quota and two access IDs.
"This new Wireless Broadband package comes with unlimited access to Maxis eKelas, to further reinforce learning of Maths and Science at home for their children," said Kugan.
"Access to eKelas is 'white-listed,' which means that when customers use the Internet to access eKelas, their usage will not be deducted from the monthly Internet quota, and they can enjoy unlimited access to eKelas," he said. "Parents can also be assured that the eKelas syllabus is fully aligned with that of our national schools."
Existing Maxis customers -mobile, fibre or broadband (fixed or wireless) - can subscribe to the eKelas service as a value-added service at RM25 (US$7.50) per month for each account, which comes with two access IDs, and pay RM20 (US$6) per month for each additional ID per child.
