UK-based Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Defence Systems (DDS) specialist Corero Network Security has selected Malaysia for its regional office and announced a deal with local distributor Spectrum Edge.

Speaking on 23 October 2012, Corero Network Security vice president for international operations, Paul Lawrence said that companies in Malaysia are starting to realise that traditional security solutions are inadequate to protect their critical websites from attacks.

"The alarming rise of high profile cyber attacks by financially motivated and ideologically inspired hactivists have prompted local businesses and government agencies to re-examine their security defences," said Lawrence.

"As the First Line of Defense, Corero Network Security uses advanced, next generation technology to stop all forms of DDoS attack, protect infrastructure and eliminate costly downtime," he said. "One of the primary benefits of our solutions is that they can handle large scale DDoS attacks at the perimeter and help to relieve the pressure on the behind the firewall security solutions that most companies will also have in place."

Lawrence said network security is akin to storage. "Storage will always grow and evolve to meet the challenge of exploding data, and so also must the security industry continue to innovate and grow to meet the increasing sophistication and volume of attacks."

"Previously, our solutions were used by large enterprises mainly," he said. "However, in recent years attackers have move to target all sizes of organisations including small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and this is another driver behind our setting up of Malaysia as a regional base to serve the demand for security solutions," he said.

Strategic partnership to meet Asian demand

Lawrence said that this strategic partnership between Corero Network Security and Spectrum Edge will strengthen Corero's market presence through a channel focused go-to-market business strategy in Malaysia by leveraging Spectrum Edge's core competencies in the IT security field.

"We are pleased to appoint Spectrum Edge as Corero's value added distributor for Malaysia," said Corero Network Security's regional manager for South East Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Eryin Halmen. "With cyber criminals launching more frequent and devastating DDoS attacks, local companies need the most effective and comprehensive front-line protection available on the market."

"Together, Corero and Spectrum Edge aims to deliver best-in-class enterprise security solutions to ensure information security and uninterrupted business continuity," said Halmen. "Corero will leverage Spectrum Edge's proven track record, strong technical expertise and a wide reseller network of more than 200 channel partners to provide large and small companies in Malaysia with secure and reliable solutions to help prevent DDoS attacks, protect their IT infrastructure, and safeguard sensitive data."

Spectrum Edge managing director, Mohamad Reza Abdul Hamid, said, "Spectrum Edge today commands a strong presence in 80 percent of all major financial services institutions, telecommunications, airlines, government and multinational companies."

"Spectrum Edge is very excited about this new partnership with Corero Network Security," said Reza.  "Corero's award-winning product line and proven expertise in DDoS defence fits perfectly into our portfolio of security solutions and value added services."
