National cyber security specialist agency CyberSecurity Malaysia has named UK aerospace, defence and security solutions company BAE Systems as 'Cyber Security Outreach Provider of the Year' for 2014 for helping to raise security awareness in Malaysia.

The award was presented to BAE Systems Applied Intelligence's Malaysia country manager, Barry Johnson, during this year's Cyber Security Malaysia - Awards, Conference & Exhibition 2015 (CSM-ACE).

"We are deeply honoured to receive an award from CyberSecurity Malaysia for the second year running," said Johnson. "This recognition reflects the endorsement of BAE Systems Applied Intelligence as the leading cyber security and digital criminality services provider in Malaysia. We are dedicated to the development of the cyber security sector and we look forward to continue to enhance and transfer our global capabilities to Malaysia."

The award recognised the company's commitment to cyber security in Malaysia and for playing a key role in improving the understanding and importance of information security among citizens and businesses.

Displaying further commitment to cyber security in Malaysia, BAE Systems also sponsored this year's CSM-ACE (6 to 10 September), which coincided with the final round of the CYBERSAFE Challenge 2015.

BAE Systems Applied Intelligence provided its expertise at a forum session entitled 'A Real Rain - Cloud Technology', focussing on the challenges, opportunities and latest developments in cyber security and cloud technology.

 Creative and critical thinking

"We believe that our role in supporting the industry through these events encourages creative and critical thinking among its participants," said Johnson. "The events focused on global information security challenges and solutions. Ultimately, we want to help strengthen the understanding and awareness among users, converting disengaged internet users to engaged, smart, and ethical ones."

BAE Systems was a key sponsor of the CYBERSAFE Challenge, which is an annual awareness programme and competition under the National ICT Security Discourse (NICTSeD) arranged by CyberSecurity Malaysia, has been taking place in Malaysia during August.

As part of its sponsorship, Fadzril Azhar, principal consultant, Cyber Security and Hareen Siriwardeen, service delivery manager, Cyber Security for BAE Systems, conducted a workshop on business communication skills as well as cyber threat landscape, where they shared industry experience with teachers and students, as well as providing one-to-one coaching for the teams participating in the finals. Representatives from the company were on the panel of judges for both the semi-finals in August and the final which was held on 8 September to coincide with CSM-ACE.

"We recognise the role that secondary school teachers and students play in ICT and information security awareness," said Johnson. "Being part of this national-level ICT Security Discourse not only opens up a world of information to secondary school students, but it also helps them understand about information security, one of our generation's most important and inclusive issues. CYBERSAFE Challenge 2015 has delivered on its potential to ensure an ongoing discourse on the topic and creating large-scale awareness.  We would like to congratulate SMK Sri Iskandar School, rep of Malacca on their success in this year's competition."

BAE Systems has strengthened its presence in Malaysia and now has more than 275 employees in its Global Engineering Centre, located in Kuala Lumpur, which focuses on local delivery and global support of the company's cyber and financial crime detection services.
