A new video competition, called 'What's Your Story?' for Malaysian college students, will raise awareness about online safety as well as offer a prize of RM5000 cash [US$1,639], said security firm Trend Micro Malaysia.
"The video competition, which closes on 31 July, combines the powerful elements of Internet reach and user generated content to encourage young people to tell their stories and share ideas about online safety." said Trend Micro Malaysia senior marketing manager, Jean Lim, during an announcement on 15 June.
"Participants are required to submit a video of two minutes or less about how best to stay safe when engaging in online activities such as texting, instant messaging, or using social networking sites. They can choose to address one of the following three topics in their video: 'Being a Good Online Citizen', 'Using a Mobile Phone Wisely' and 'Maintaining Your Privacy Online'."
"Through this initiative, Trend Micro is enabling kids, parents and educators to be smart about online safety," said Lim. "We believe the best way to educate individuals on the importance of online safety is by creating a platform that can engage people and also allow them to share their stories and experiences with others."
She said Trend Micro would be hosting a series of roadshows at selected private universities and colleges to encourage students to participate in the video competition. "Videos will be uploaded to the Trend Micro Malaysia Facebook page, and contestants can encourage their friends to view and 'like' their submitted video. Only videos that garner the most number of 'likes' will be considered for prizes by the contest judges.
"The power of social media enables us to reach a wider and more relevant audience. We believe those who participate will be able to convey the virtues of online safety to their peers and in the process help build a local community that is more aware of online safety issues."
