Telekom Malaysia's research and development subsidiary TM R&D has signed a memorandum of agreement with Chinese telecom solutions provider ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation [ZTE] to conduct research on next generation passive optical network 2 (NGPON 2) in a bid to offer higher bandwidth - in excess of 100 Gbps [Gigabits per second] - for TM customers.
During the signing of the agreement, TM R&D chief executive officer Dr Gopi Kurup said the arrangement MoU between TM R&D and ZTE will also allow greater cooperation in advancing the innovation landscape of Malaysia in the international arena.
"TM R&D initiated and has continued to grow the local photonics and optical research in collaboration with Malaysian universities," said Dr Kurup. "The capacity and capability developed in the field has attracted the attention of global technology companies like ZTE to collaborate in further pushing the boundaries in this important telecommunications technology."
He added that the agreement included NGPON research in contributing towards achieving the international standards through the strengthening of NGPON2 framework. Both parties will share their research facilities and create mirroring labs in both countries, China and Malaysia.
ZTE Malaysia managing director, Steven Ge, said, "We look forward to partnering with the largest integrated telecommunications provider in Malaysia through our collaboration with TM R&D."
"This agreement is in line with ZTE corporate strategy to continue working with top R&D centres throughout the world and we foresee this collaboration will benefit both parties especially in the Next Generation PON development," said Ge. "We hope this NGPON development could be tested in real life environment, especially in the Telekom Malaysia network to ensure local adaptability of the end product."
