Singapore is among the first markets in the Asia-Pacific for the smartwatch with a total of 1400 of these devices having been sold in this country last January and February.
This was according to the consumer and market research firm, GfK whose press statement said the January and February sales amounted to US $345.000.
The press statement by the Nuremburg, Germany-based firm added that prices of these devices ranged from US $100 to over US $300 each with higher-end models accounting for 90% of sales during the first month of 2014.
It further said there are six brands of smartwatches currently on sale in Singapore.
The first smartwatch launched globally in 2013 with Singapore as among the first markets in the Asia-Pacific for this device.
Reason for its selection was its status as an economically developed country.
Basic features of the smartwatch resemble those of smartphones and tablets, some of them being GPS, time and tracking functionalities, weather forecasts and calling.
The press statement quoted a senior GfK executive, Gerard Tan, saying that smartwatches are still in their first generation technologically and adoption by consumers is still low.
However, he added, further technological upgrades with each succeeding generation would bring about greater adoption by consumers.
