Organisations that are planning to embark on a digital transformation journey must have an IT leader to drive the change, willingness to invest on new technologies, and a reliable connectivity partner.
This is according to Mike Soriano, Product Management and Development Head of Eastern Communications, who spoke at the CIO Summit Philippines on 22 September 2016 at the New World Hotel in Makati City.
In his presentation, Soriano elaborated that a good CIO is someone who has strong digital leadership and management, understands the digital opportunities and threats, digitally fluent, and a coach to the employees.
"As a CIO, [he/she needs to be] a digital leader who would know which digital knowledge is important in the different functional areas," he explained. "Likewise, the CIO will provide useful information, so the driver or the information source will be the CIO."
Being in the forefront of digitalisation, Soriano noted that CIOs play an important role in driving an organisational culture that accepts and adapts to change. "The culture has to be there, there has to be a collective mindset of embracing the change."
He added that businesses will only move forward in their digital transformation journey when the mindset and culture in organisation are aligned to each other.
As digitalisation requires the adoption of new technologies, Soriano said that businesses must be willing to invest in new tools, as well as enable their employees to upskill.
He also underscored the importance of having a reliable connectivity partner to power the organisation's digital initiatives. "From the IT standpoint, an outage is the worst scenario, so having to choose the best partner or right partner for this endeavour is very important."
Soriano thus advised IT leaders to pick a service provider that has the capability to provide a reliable internet connection, has global connectivity partners, a range of products and services that fit the needs of the organisation, and after-sales commitment to the success of the company's digital transformation journey.
