Samsung Galaxy S5 gets 24 February launch date: Unpacked 5 at MWC

Samsung looks set to unveil the Galaxy S5 at this month's MWC

Samsung has hinted at a Galaxy S5 launch with an Unpacked 5 event invitation.

Amid a whirlwind of Galaxy S5 rumours, no one predicted that Samsung would reveal the flagship smartphone on 24 February at Mobile Wold Congress. However, this seems more than likely with the announcement of an 'Unpacked 5' event. See also: 18 best smartphones: The best phone you can buy in 2013.

One previous rumour suggested an Unpacked event would take place on 23 February but that it wouldn't be for the Galaxy S5. Instead devices like the Galaxy Note Neo would take to the stage while leaving the GS5 for its own event, tipped to be London once again after the Galaxy S4 launch was held in New York.

This new development, straight from Samsung itself which Tweeted "Mark your calendars" strongly hints, to put it lightly, at the Galaxy S5. The smartphone is tipped to feature a 5.25in 2K AMOLED screen, a 16Mp rear facing camera and an Exynos 6 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor. It's been debated whether the handset will use a metal or plastic design with the possibility of both options launching.

The event, called Samsung Unpacked 2014 Episode 1, will take place on 24 February at 8pm. It will be held at in Barcelona where MWC, this year's big smartphone and tablet show, is taking place.

Although it might seem strange for Samsung to suddenly announce its new flagship smartphone at a show, compared to having a separate Apple-style event. It makes a lot of sense because tech journalists, analysts and more importantly industry buyers will all be in Barcelona for the show.

We'll be there to bring you full coverage of the event so make sure you join us. If you can't make it to Barcelona, Samsung will be live streaming the event on YouTube.
