Samsung aims to solidify new device category with Galaxy Note 2 release

Yewon Kang | Sept. 27, 2012
Facing stiff competition but aiming for aggressive sales goals, Samsung Electronics Wednesday in Korea released the Galaxy Note 2, its new smartphone-tablet hybrid, and said it will follow up with international launches over the next month.

Some analysts, however, said there is a niche for the device.

"Galaxy Note might appeal to people who use it for work, [people] who want productivity and usability as well as portability and convenience," said Scott Bicheno, a London-based analyst with Strategy Analytics.

Samsung has sold about 12 million Galaxy Note devices globally since its launch and the Galaxy S III smartphone topped 10 million within two month of its release, according to Strategy Analytics. Most recently, Apple's iPhone 5 sold more than 5 million in its first weekend on sale.
