Redesigned iPad 5, Retina iPad mini 2 coming in October, iPhone 5S with 13MP camera in July - report

New reports appear to shed some light on Apple's rumoured 2013 iOS device line-up.

Fresh reports claim to share new information about Apple's rumoured 2013 product lineup, including an iPad 5 with a 'stretched iPad mini' design, a Retina iPad mini, the iPhone 5S, low-cost iPhone and a bigger iPhone.

In two new reports published on Friday, iLounge's Jeremy Horwitz claims to have inspected a "supposedly accurate" physical model of Apple's iPad 5, which he says is "completely redesigned".

Horwitz claims that the fifth-generation iPad, apparently codenamed J72, will be have a 9.7in screen, which, when held in portrait orientation, has almost no left or right bezels. The top and bottom bezels will have the minimum amount of space needed to accommodate the home button and the camera, he says.

It's also noticeably thinner, adds Horwitz, who describes the overall design as a "stretched iPad mini", and says that last week's 3D rendering of the iPad 5 (as shown below) is "pretty close" to the model he allegedly got his hands on earlier this month.

Horwitz expects that Apple will use new screen technology such as IGZO displays in order to achieve the thinner design. He also believes that a full internal redesign, including a smaller and more power efficient processor, will be required.

The iPad 5's processing capabilities are likely to be similar to the current iPad 4, with the thinner, lighter design and improved display the key selling points for the new tablet, Horwitz says.

As for the launch date, Horwitz believes that the iPad 5 is set for an October unveiling, rather than the rumoured March launch, due to the low availability of the new screens and processors. Japanese display supplier Sharp's recent struggles could also be a factor preventing Apple from launching its next iPad in the first half of the year.

The report claims that the iPad mini 2, which goes by the code name of J85 according to Horwitz's sources, is also set to arrive in October, and will look and feel just like its predecessor but will have a Retina display.

Horwitz also cites sources who claim that the next-generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5S, will arrive in July and have the same design as the current iPhone 5, but with a larger rear flash and an upgraded camera that could feature Sony's 13-megapixel sensor. The iPhone 5S is also expected to have a better processor.

The sources say that the iPhone 5S will be joined by a low-cost iPhone with a plastic body this year. The low-cost iPhone will target China Mobile and will be aimed at underdeveloped countries in order to address those markets.

According to Horwitz's sources, the current iPhone 5S and low-cost iPhone prototypes are codenamed N51 and N53.
