An iPhone case/stun gun combo has just become available for the iPhone 5.
We've seen some interesting iPhone cases in our time, from super-robust tanks that could withstand nuclear war (possibly) to creepy phone cases in the shape of children's hands. But this is the first iPhone case we've seen that could cause serious injury.
The Yellow Jacket line of smartphone cases feature a built-in stun gun packing 650,000 volts of power. The idea is that iPhone users will be able to defend themselves against would-be assailants without having to reach for a separate defensive object. It actually makes a sort of sense, given that muggers often target people who are using a smartphone — they know that the victim has something worth stealing, and that they are temporarily distracted.
Still, we're pretty sure you won't be able to use the device in the UK. The precise designation of this hardware is unclear to us, but it's similar to a Taser, and they're prohibited under the Firearms Act 1968 (possession carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison and an unlimited fine). In the US itself, sale is certainly limited, with the company listing the areas where such weapons are illegal: five states, areas of four more and the District of Colombia.
The iPhone 4/4S model is available now for $139.99 (sadly only the black model, however — the yellow, white and — gulp — pink models are out of stock). Yellow Jacket cases for the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 have just become available for pre-order.
