Oculus pissed? Here are 6 Facebook-free virtual reality alternatives

Jared Newman | March 27, 2014
Facebook's plan to acquire Oculus VR for $2 billion has been as polarizing as you'd expect.

Current status: It's still in the prototype phase. You can pre-order a developer kit for $499, with an estimated Q4 ship date.

Avegant Glyph

What it is: A headset that uses projectors instead of displays, beaming a pair of 1280-by-800 resolution images straight into your eyes and using any HDMI connection as the signal. The narrow eyeband allows you to still look up or down at your surroundings, and you can flip it up above your head to use the Glyph like a set of headphones. It will apparently support head-tracking for virtual reality applications.

Current status: The "beta" version is available for pre-order, with a price of $499 and a ship date of Q1 2015.
