Low Internet connectivity speeds are among various factors that disappoint Malaysian mobile Web users, according to a recent online survey by software and Web solutions firm Compuware Corporation.
"For a rapidly growing and highly mobile market such as Malaysia, the speed by which Malaysians perform tasks on their mobile devices is critical," said Compuware Malaysia managing director, Koh Eng Kiong.
"In Malaysia, 70 percent of mobile users expect their device to load at an equal or faster speed than that of their computer at home," said Koh. "This means that Malaysian consumers do not have the patience for slow or faulty websites; 58 percent of the respondents will move to a competitor's site, if the site is not functioning properly."
"For businesses, this is tantamount to lost opportunities," he said. "As consumers become more technology savvy, companies need to ensure that their websites perform optimally to deliver a seamless website experience to consumers. In the mobile Internet era, speed and performance are fundamental in successfully capturing mobile opportunities."
Koh referenced analyst firm Forrester Research's expectations that mobile commerce would top US$6 billion by the end of this year (2011) and would reach US$31 billion by 2016.
"Mobile users expect quick, anytime, transactions that work flawlessly," he said. "This isn't surprising because mobile users often use their devices for urgent needs like checking flight status, confirming reservations, comparing price options, and making appointments. Urgency heightens their expectations for speedy downloads; if you fail to meet their need for speed, you may pay a steep price."
Compuware Corporation conducted an online study from 1 August to 15 September 2011, which included 101 respondents in Malaysia who own and use a mobile phone to access the Internet.
