The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 emerged as Singapore's top trending search term this year, according to a 2014 Year in Review (YIR) by Yahoo Singapore.
MH370 also ranked as the most popular news events in Singapore, along with another aviation tragedy MH17. Other trending news events include Singapore haze, City Harvest Church (CHC) trial, Hong Kong protests, Ebola outbreak and the South Korea ferry disaster.
YIR is an annual recap of the top search trends, happenings and events, which grabbed the attention of Yahoo users in Singapore. YIR is based on what users searched for throughout the year, and an editorial selection of what was most read, recommended and shared on Yahoo in 2014.
Following MH370, iPhone 6 was the second trending search term this year. The newly released Apple smartphone was also the most searched tech gear in 2014, according to the YIR. Three other Apple products appear in the top 10 gadget searches, including iPhone 5C, iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 Plus. Samsung clocked in with two Galaxy devices.
The third most popular search term in Singapore was Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence, who also topped the most popular female celebrity list. Other local and international women celebrities who made it to the list include first-time moms Fann Wong, Kate Middleton and Kim Kardashian, as well as newlyweds Amal Alamuddin and Joanne Peh.
Other search terms that made it to the top 10 list for this year include PSI reading, MH17, World Cup (also the top sport search), Fann Wong, CHC trial, Frozen movie and Hong Kong protests.
