A tripartite partnership between Malaysia's Tune Talk, Ninetology Marketing and Qualcomm has produced a smartphone called Pearl Mini, which offers speed, graphics and longer battery life, targetting the youth market.
During the launch campaign, themed 'Experiencing Differences with The Youth's Spirit,' Ninetology Marketing (Ninetology) chief executive officer Sean Ng said the Pearl Mini was powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform, a 3.5 inch HVGA (half-size VGA) display, and Android Gingerbread 2.3 operating system.
"Our collaboration with MVNO [mobile virtual network operator] Tune Talk and Qualcomm is to address the demands of the huge youth market," said Ng. "As future leaders of tomorrow and with technology moving at a rapid pace, we want to offer youths a smartphone that is affordable yet packed with astounding multimedia features that will enable them to connect to the digital world seamlessly, regardless of whether they are living in urban or rural areas."
"Being able to access the Internet is no longer a luxury but a necessity," he said. "There is so much to learn from the Internet and to youths, this is their world. We hope with the launch of Pearl Mini, we will be able to provide them world class quality yet secure edutainment."
"We are confident that Pearl Mini will be a sell-out and are expecting 100,000 units to be sold from the date of release, until the next new smartphone model is launched this year," said Ng.
Tune Talk chief executive officer Jason Lo said the Pearl Mini would be packaged with Tune Talk's prepaid service with no-frills voice and short messaging service (SMS) that meet the demands for a simple, value-for-money product with easy accessibility.
"Tune Talk's philosophy has always been to provide super low calling rates and exciting incentives to the underserved segment of the market. We are happy to collaborate with Ninetology, who shares our vision of having the need to reach out to more youths and to enable them to get on to the Internet," said Lo.
Pearl Mini is available starting from third week of April and is sold at all Ninetology and Tune Talk retail outlets nationwide at a recommended retail price of RM399 (US$131). This model is also applicable for the Malaysian government's Youth Communication Package (PKB) rebate.
