Malaysian telco Telekom Malaysia, which powers the country's latest pay TV service, HyppTV, has launched a 24x7 business channel called Capital TV.
Capital TV was formally launched end of March by the deputy minister of Information, Communication and Culture, Y.B. Dato' Joseph Salang together with Online Dynamics chairman, Dato' Capt. A. Sufian, The Capital chief executive officer, Noor Azman Yusof, and Telekom Malaysia (TM) executive vice president, new media, Jeremy Kung.
The Capital has been on air in HD (high definition) since its soft launch in December 2011 focusing on in-depth coverage of all aspects of the business and financial world in Malaysia and the region, according to The Capital's Azman.
"The Capital offers business insights and independent market analysis that are more relevant to the local audience in its news and magazine programmes, targeted to reach the underserved professionals, managers, executives and business persons as well as key opinion leaders," he said.
"The Capital is a channel that suits Malaysians who are interested to stay tune with the local and regional business and financial industries," said the information, communication and culture ministry's Salang. "As the first of its kind, we fully support and excitedly look forward to the performance of The Capital. We hope that this will provide not only updated information to Malaysians who are already involved in the business world, but also to educate the masses who may be interested in venturing into business or finance."
"TM's symbiotic relationship with Capital TV is very much in line with the new economic model of the Malaysian government where the private sector is to be the driving force of the country's economy," said TM's Kung. "Through this relationship, TM is providing the avenue for content providers to benefit from the platform offered by TM under HSBB [high speed broadband] project. We are developing a content eco-system platform that would assist local content providers to bring to market their respective content and applications. This platform would also come with systems and backroom support."
Other providers welcome
"In fact, we welcome and encourage content providers, particularly the small homegrown ones, to come and talk to us about collaboration on the HSBB service," Kung said. "TM, as the operator of an IPTV [internet protocol TV] service - HyppTV - provides the platform to broadcast Capital TV. With this, HyppTV is able to provide in-depth and balance coverage of Malaysian business and financial market, including news, issues and happenings in the country to complement the international business news made available through other news channels readily available on HyppTV."
Operated by local firm Online Dynamics, The Capital's anchor programme is its news content called Capital Update, which provides the latest market update live everyday at 6pm. The Capital also produces several magazine programmes in-house such as Enterprise, Business Game, MoneyTalks, Persona and BrainStorm.
