Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX, also known as 'Persatuan Pengendali Internet Malaysia') has unveiled the latest national Internet data patterns recorded during year 2015, which showed Internet traffic peered over the Exchange's nodes peaking at 145 Gbps.
During the official opening of a new MyIX office in Setiawalk, Puchong, MyIX chairman, Chiew Kok Hin, said, "The highest bandwidth travelling through MyIX infrastructure last year took place in November 2015 [whereby MyIX recorded 145 Gbps of data travelling per second]. When compared to November 2014, this shows a 53 per cent increase in data travelling per second through MyIX."
With Netflix and iflix expected to fuel increasing demand within the National Internet Exchange, Chiew said that MyIX, an initiative under MCMC (national regulator Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission), has expanded with the opening of the new RM1.4 million (US$340,000) Puchong office.
Another major driver for the increasing Internet consumption amongst Malaysians was attributed to the prominent trend in mobile Internet surfing, he said. This is supported by the rapid expansion of 4G networks in line with the Communications minister's 58 percent LTE coverage KPI for end 2015, which has been exceeded.
"MyIX has been noting that the change in consumer Internet surfing patterns have a direct correlation with the massive increases in Internet consumption - such as the increased usage of smartphones for just about everything," Chiew said, adding that the research firm Gartner has predicted that by the end of 2016, 82 percent of mobile phones will be smartphones, up by 12 percent from 2015. This is in contrast to the declining PC shipments worldwide (of 8.3 percent in the Q4 of 2015).
Malaysians quick to adopt
"Malaysians are a highly suitable demography of Internet consumers who are quick to adopt new smartphone applications and content offerings, supported by the country's broadband infrastructure that is continually being promoted by MCMC," he said.
In addition, MyIX will help to increase technical knowledge within the local telecommunications industry especially the mid-level to senior technical and design employees of Internet service providers (ISP), network operators or enterprises, who are involved in day-to-day network operations and planning functions.
By working together with Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) - the not-for-profit regional Internet registry for the Asia Pacific region, MyIX aims to provide technical training workshops to enrich the skills of technical employees of the telecommunications industry.
"MyIX has been around for a decade now, since our establishment in 2006, and we have made a significant difference in driving the growth of the Internet industry in Malaysia by a) facilitating the efforts to make broadband connectivity prices more competitive, and b) keeping local Internet data traffic domestic - not having to go through expensive overseas international routes for content;" Chiew said.
In 2006, the MyIX central node interconnection capacity was at 10,000 Mbps and was sufficient to connect all of the peering members at that time.
Today, MyIX's infrastructure is supported by a 40,000 Mbps capacity central node interconnection and the National Internet Exchange boasts a total of 84 members comprising of all Malaysian telecommunication providers, foreign ISPS as well as top social media sites and content providers such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, Amazon, Akamai, Microsoft, Swiftserve, Tencent, Biznet Networks, Hutchison Global and Telstra.
"Peering helps keep traffic local, reducing the lag between connection and at the same time decreasing the inter-country connectivity costs that were a huge cost for local telcos prior to the set-up of MyIX. We will continue to welcome and invite new peering partners to join us in order to ensure an overall improve Internet experience for Malaysians," he said.
