Malaysians must shop smarter online: PayPal, CyberSecurity Malaysia

CyberSecurity Malaysia emphasises safer smarter online shopping behaviour together with PayPal, which also shares its first study - 'PayPal Online and Mobile Safety Insights'

Ghanem said that with the increasing adoption of smartphone and mobile device in Malaysia, nearly 7 out of 10 respondents said they would use their mobile devices to make a payment because of convenience. "However, nearly six out of 10 mobile shoppers had previously stopped a mobile transaction in the past because of the hassle of entering financial details on a small screen."

However, according to a recent PayPal study, Ghanem said the Malaysian online shopping market reached RM1.8 billion (US$606 million) in 2010 and is expected to reach RM5 billion (US$1.57 billion) in 2014.

"[Also] we want people to continue to go online to find the best bargains," he said. "And we want them to feel safe. So we will be promoting awareness about cyber security threats as well as top safety tips through this multimedia nationwide campaign."

"More than 50 percent of Malaysians have the same password across more than one online account," said Ghanem. "Be aware of where you have placed your personal details online, especially in your social networking activity. Use a digital wallet on your mobile device and select a trusted payments merchant. On a day-to-day basis, be aware of sophisticated phishing techniques that use false presences and knowledge about your friendships online to steal personal information."

"While cyber crime is a real threat, Malaysians can, by being more cautious. still take advantage of the growing benefits of being online," he said, adding that PayPal expected to run the study again in six to nine months to measure the level of awareness of the need for online security in Malaysia.

Ghanem said that safety tips advocated include using different keys for different accounts rather than the same password. "Never share personal information through an external link such as e-mail. Lock and password protect your phone and mobile devices and use trusted sites and a digital wallet. On websites, look for the padlock icon on the stop. Also, be wary of phishing through SMS (smishing), which is also on the rise. Always give information through a trusted site and avoid other channels."

CyberSecurity Malaysia's Husin said that PayPal's 'Safe Online Shopping Month' (for December) was also supplemented by existing safety tips and free tools -- such as DontPhishMe and DNSwatch -- available from CyberSecurity Malaysia's portal.

"Malaysians should adopt a more proactive aware approach rather than a reactive one, such as attempting to track criminals after the act, which was more drawn out and involved different agencies," he said, adding that the agency's reports showed that phishing made up 57 percent of the fraud portion of reported cases.

Husin said the CyberSecurity Malaysia portals include a simple list of safety tips called the CyberSAFE (CyberSecurity Awareness for Everyone) programme. "This is our initiative to educate and enhance awareness of the general Malaysian public and detail good online social networking, e-mail, privacy and identity protection habits for all groups including school children, students, adults and organisations."
