Malaysian women call for flexible working

Intel Malaysia coorganised a recent inaugural Northern Region MNC Women’s Leadership Summit in Penang, which included findings from a recent survey by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp).

Malaysian women want flexible work arrangements to balance family commitments, work-life balance with equal opportunities and rewards, according to a new survey by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp).

The survey results formed part of an inaugural Northern Region MNC Women's Leadership Summit held on 26 August 2013 in Penang, Malaysia, organised by semiconductor provider Intel Malaysia and national agency Talent Corporation (TalentCorp), which included the retention of women towards leadership excellence

Intel Malaysia human resource director Suresh Chandra said the event, which was in tune with the Malaysian government's objective of increasing women's participation in the country's workforce from 49.5 to 55 percent by the end of 2015 [10th Malaysia Plan 2011-2015], was also a step to building a women's network connecting companies in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia.

"At Intel, we understand the value of a diverse workforce. It is imperative for companies to set up initiatives to attract, recruit, integrate, develop and retain women in the workforce," said Chandra. "To advance a work environment that honours, values, and respects all of employees, we need to promote efforts to hire, develop and retain technical female employees and underrepresented ethnic groups within the organisation."

 "We should also consistently strive to enrich our women employees and encourage personal growth with policies and measures that ensure employees achieve a healthy work-life balance," said Intel Corporation vice president, software and services group & director, developer relations division operations, Intel PRC & & Intel Asia Pacific, Sophia Chew in her keynote address.

"Our Women@Intel Network (WIN) addresses exactly that," said Chew. WIN is a network of Intel's female and male employees who participate in a variety of activities with the aim of enhancing efforts to attract, recruit, integrate, develop and retain female talents in the workforce."

"I believe with the right set of workplace best practices and a supportive network like Intel's WIN, women can and will take the lead in corporate Malaysia," she said.

 Low participation rate in workforce

"Malaysia has 49.5 percent women participation rate in the workforce, which is one of the lowest in this region," said TalentCorp chief executive officer, Johan Mahmood Merican.

"In supporting the Government's target of increasing women participation in the labour force, Malaysian companies play a powerful role in encouraging the retention of women in the workplace," said Johan.

"TalentCorp is working with a network of employers through the flexWorkLifedotMy portal to share best practices, advertise jobs with flexible work arrangements and provide tax incentives to encourage employers to recruit women who have left the workforce," he said. "In fact, Intel is foremost among employers that have contributed their best practices in the flexWorkLife portal.  We also have a senior HR leader from Intel who is a TalentCorp Diversity Advocate."
