Mobile communications provider Nokia Malaysia, MSC [Multimedia Supercorridor] Malaysia status online community Lowyat MSC, and digital marketing firm PersonEdge have launched an online reality show called 'The Influencer' where local online personalities will compete for the most influential online personality spot.

PersonEdge co-founder and managing director Choo Mei Sze said the venture features 10 Malaysian online personalities from the local technology and lifestyle industries and will stream to Lowyat's visitors beginning 6 December.

"Everyone wants to be a part of 'new media' but do not have the right strategy to operate and promote their brands through the medium," said Choo. "The only method was to promote through online advertisements, which has created clutter within the medium, causing its effectiveness to decline. But many do not understand the alternatives - creating contents through digital and social media experts, which include online personalities."

"Contestants will be trained to be an all-rounded online personality as most of them are too comfortable with their own platform," she said. "This competition allows them to discover their hidden talents beyond their comfort zone, in both online and offline platform, which will build the credibility and importance of online personalities in Malaysia."

The contestants include Cheeserland, Vernon Chan, Ben Ashaari, Kelly Chin, Rebecca Saw, Ami Schaheera, Karen Kho, Jacklyn Gan, Ah Bok and dancer Chriz Ooi, who will all be using the Nokia Lumia 1520 to empower themselves through six different challenges: technology, beauty, food, fitness, fashion and travel.

Nokia Pan-Asia head of marketing, Gary Chan, said, "Customers today realise the potential of mobile devices beyond voice and increasingly use their devices for various tasks in their daily life. These influencers will also have the privilege to be the first Malaysians to experience this fantastic device and put them to test in real-life scenarios. We believe this thin, sleek 6-inch device with an amazing 20-megapixel camera will enable the Influencers to excel in their weekly challenge with ease."

The winner of 'The Influencer' will be rewarded cash prizes as well as products. Other sponsors include Konji International, Love Bonito, Lansi, and Kenanga Wholesale City.
