My interest lies in bridging this gap. How do we build the awareness and talent that will sustain the growth in this region? The challenge we have in the world right now is too much data. We are constantly finding ways to effectively piece the data together.
CWHK: How would you advise CIOs to move up the corporate ladder?
KL: For IT professionals who want to run a global business, it's an option. There are global CEOs at GE who were IT-trained. But every professional has his or her own career path. You don't have to be a CEO to be successful.
Regardless of the role you'd like to pursue, first you need to deliver, and then you help your peers or surrounding functions to do more. When you help others to deliver, that's when you bring true value to the business.
A lot of times, we turn down requests. It is easy to turn them down because they would bring us a heavier workload. However, doing your job is plainly delivering what you are supposed to. Doing the extra work to add value for others is the critical piece that helps you to move forward.
