Is the Internet facing a capacity crunch?

APAC consumers' increasing use of mobile devices and consumption of high quality video content are causing the Internet to head towards a capacity crunch, says David Habben of Akamai.

The Internet is at risk of facing a capacity crunch due to the increasing adoption of mobile devices and demand for high quality video content in the Asia Pacific region, according to Akamai.

"[As a result of the increasing number of mobile users and the availability of Internet in the region], Internet consumption of video has grown at a rate of almost double year-on-year," said David Habben, Chief Media Strategist for Asia Pacific and Japan, at Akamai Technologies.

To further add to the pressure on the Internet infrastructure, broadcasters are now delivering their live channels online to meet consumers' expectations. Moreover, video sites such as YouTube and Netflix are increasingly offering content in high quality formats such as high-definition (HD), 4K and 8K.

"Today's Internet infrastructure simply isn't keeping pace with the growing demands mentioned above. The inability of the infrastructure to scale accordingly will limit access to the Internet and result in network congestion," said Habben.

The finance, broadcast, retail, and hospitality industries are expected to be heavily affected by this capacity crunch as consumers expect them to deliver interactive sites that load quickly. "As these businesses look to increase their online presence, they might implement interactive elements, such as videos and real time communication, to set themselves apart. However, these elements add on to their site's bandwidth, thus slowing down the overall web experience and directly impacting online engagement revenue. This is supported by our recent study which found that 30 percent of e-commerce consumers expect a page to load in one second or less, and more than 20 percent of users will leave the website for good if they are not satisfied with the web experience," said Habben.
