Ranjan Tayal, SVP & SBU Head - HCM Solution, Ramco Systems Limited
In this interview, Ranjan Tayal, SVP & SBU Head - HCM Solution, Ramco Systems Limited, discusses HRM challenges of managing a distributed workforce in an increasingly complicated tax and payroll structure/environment across multiple locations.
Can you summarise what are the new challenges facing MNCs in terms of a distributed workforce and increasingly complicated tax and payroll issues across multiple locations?
As global MNCs expand to new markets, a major headache is harmonizing human resource functions of HQ to a dispersed workforce. In these new markets, HR requirements are far from homogenous and offer multiple hurdles such as different taxation, superannuation and retirement parameters. At the same time many different currencies also have to be aligned.
Also, due to diversified workforce there've been problems of language, communication, cultural differences, etc. For instance, is Tomay-to and Tomah-to the same vegetable? Do we all understand the word 'fix' in the same way? It can range from "I'm fixing to go home vs. I fixing the problem".
From an IT perspective, languages are spoken differently. Words and notations differ though the language is the same. Words such as Salary, Compensation, Pay, etc., are used interchangeably. Implementations of French, Arabic etc. are different in countries where they are spoken. Delivering multi-lingual solutions where a challenge. Client-wise language deployments are now a cloud reality though this wasn't the case previously.
Increasingly, MNCs are willing to cut the umbilical cord of HQ HR software. More and more regional HR managers want the freedom to select local or regional payroll and HR software which is more aligned with unique conditions. Regional HR managers also want to use new technologies such as GPS and Near Field Communications (NFCs) to make HR decisions instantaneously via the cloud on mobile devices.
Why are existing IT payroll and HR systems not able to address these issues?
Availability of information anywhere anytime is critical to today's business leaders, as they are always under pressure to meet business targets. Mobility is important to multi-task and complete business priorities and deliverables on the go. Many IT systems these days aren't mobile. There's a surge in increasing employee productivity by making key information available anywhere, anytime. HR Systems should aid an employee to manage multiple self-service transactions on the go. Similarly, the Manager can complete multiple transactions pertaining to their teams, while away from the desk including while commuting, traveling on work, at home or in a meeting. Another critical issue, organizations face these days is the unavailability of automatic updates.
