India is set to be the second largest smartphone market after the People's Republic of China (PRC) by 2017, said IDC.
According to IDC's APEJ Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, a total of 9.3 million smartphones were shipped in the second quarter of 2013 (2Q13), almost tripling the amount shipped in the same period last year.
Kiranjeet Kaur, senior market analyst with IDC's Client Devices group, attributed the growth in India's smartphone market to "low-priced phones equipped with a large screen and dual SIM slots."
The share of sub-US$200 smartphones in 2Q13 was found to account for two-thirds of the total smartphone market. IDC thus expects the average selling price of smartphones in India to fall below US$200 by the end of this year.
Smartphone vendors dominating the Indian market
While Samsung and Nokia are still dominating the Indian market, local vendors have stepped up their efforts to be the leading smartphone vendor. Local vendors include Micromax, Karbonn, Lava, Intex and Celkon.
Manasi Yadav, senior market analyst with IDC India, said: "The growth in the India smartphone market is driven by consistent performance by local vendors who accounted for more than half of the total smartphone market in 2Q13. These vendors have been scaling up operations owing to rising migration of the user base from feature phones to smartphones."
Currently, the top five smartphone vendors in India are:
- Samsung: It has maintained its top spot as the Samsung Galaxy Star and its mid-tier smartphones have catered to wide range of consumers in the market. The cash-back and zero-percent interest Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) schemes have also benefited the company.
- Micromax: The local company has shipped more than two million units. It is depending on its Canvas range of devices which feature bigger screens and better imaging capabilities to further drive sales.
- Karbonn: Understanding that the Indian market is price-sensitive, the local company is ensuring that its Titanium range of smartphones offer good features at competitive prices to encourage adoption.
- Nokia: It has gained this position by positioning Lumia phones as better replacement to other brands, as well launching Lumia 520 for the lower end of the market.
- Sony: The adoption of its mid-tier range and lower-end dual SIM phones has contributed to its sales.
